Shannon Briggs, from Kids Free to Grow in York County, is trained in the Strengthening Families model. Last month she joined us to present a protective factor work shop for parents.
This time Shannon will use an interactive "café" model for parents and other caregivers.
The Parent Café helps facilitate discussion and problem solving with prompting questions like, "How do you have fun and how does that impact your parenting?" and
"How do you get your child's school to understand your child's needs?"
Please join us on March 15th 6:30-7:30 pm in the privacy and comfort of your home!

Happy March! Ms. Corriveau and Ms. Gilpatrick have been looking forward to brining you our March genre all year... FANTASY!
WHAT IS FANTASY?
Fantasy books are set in imaginary, fictional universes. Magical and supernatural elements set the fantasy genre apart from others. Fantasy can include fairy tales, legends, mythology, witchcraft, medieval societies, and super-powered heroes.
WHY SHOULD YOU GIVE THIS GENRE A CHANCE?
Fantasy novels will spark your imagination and take you on trips to magical worlds. Because it’s fantasy, there are no limits. There’s a fantastic universe for every reader. If you’d like to forget the real world, try escaping reality with some fantasy today!

Marshwood Middle School had so much fun celebrating Spirit Week before vacation. Monday was anything but a backpack day, Tuesday students and staff dressed alike for twin day, Wednesday's theme was Western Day, the weather hit just right for Thursday's Summer day and we ended the week with everyone's favorite- Purple and White Day! We all had so much fun!

Good News From Marshwood Middle School
Students in Mr. Petrie's 8th Grade Social Studies Classes spent last week planning, designing, building, and playing their own board games. The games are al based on the Great Depression and students were charged with using information and situations from the 1930s and implementing them into board games. Students had to decide upon an objective for winning, create the board and all game pieces as well as write up the rules for each game. Here they are playing each other's games and evaluating them.

Each month the MMS advisories focus on a theme. For February, our theme is kindness. The rest of this month we will be practicing random acts of kindness everyday. Students were given a calendar with kindness ideas. All students will have the opportunity to complete one activity a day and that they should check off the completed activity of the day. On Tuesday 2/28/23, students will turn in their calendars to their advisors after completing and marking off as many random acts of kindness as they have completed.
As part of our celebration of Kindness month we are honoring February 17th, Random Acts of Kindness Day! Here at MMS we will begin celebrating starting TODAY. Officer Mazur started a Kindness Watch list. He challenged the MMS staff to watch out for acts of kindness and to let him know when we see one! Several students were caught being extra kind, helpful and thoughtful, without being asked, and we’d like to they are being recognized this month!

Breakfast at Marshwood Middle School
Free Breakfast is available to all MMS students from 7am-10am. Students may receive breakfast upon arrival to school, during advisory, or during their scheduled morning break.
Snacks are also available for purchase throughout the day.

Good News from Marshwood Middle School
Selected Marshwood Middle School Chorus students joined 80 singers from area middle schools to practice and perform in the York County Junior High Music Festival held at Bonny Eagle Middle School on January 27 and 28. From left to right are: Baer Gray, Owen McCormack, Sam Wakefield, Lucia Blanchette, Abbie SanDiego, Hannah Tuttle, and Payton Caswell. Congratulations students!

Last week Ms. Corriveau hosted a celebration of World Read Aloud Day. There were more than 500 visits to the library. Students joined Ms. Gilpatrick and Ms. Corriveau throughout the day for variety of read alouds.

Are there any motions delegates would like to bring to the floor?
"For posterity sake vote yes!" says Patrick Adams to the parliament in Mrs. Thompson's Social Studies class. In this simulation unit 7th graders have been divided into three groups: Patriots, Neutralists and Loyalists. They have been writing and giving speeches for and against various acts. This is the first of several speeches the students will be giving in their Social Studies class this year.

We have made it to the halfway point in the school year! Today the sixth graders stood at their lockers to see how they measure up. At the beginning of the school year teachers marked how tall students were on their locker. The measuring activity is repeated midway through the year and again in June. It is so fun to see the literal growth of the students.

Living in Maine and New Hampshire we are used to our winters being full of snow. This year some students are missing the snow. Last week some of the middle schoolers paused to enjoy the snow as it was falling.

January's genre of the month is here!
WHAT IS SCIENCE FICTION?
Science fiction stories are set in imagined, futuristic societies with advanced technology and science. The science behind the story should be somewhat believable, which is what makes it sci-fi and not fantasy.
WHY SHOULD YOU GIVE THIS GENRE A CHANCE?
Science fiction helps us escape reality and exercise our imaginations. It also helps us think about the present and future of science and technology.
See Ms. Corriveau in the MMS library for some Science Fiction recommendations! She has some good ones!

Students at Marshwood Middle School are busy building robots in 8th-grade Robotics Class. Using EV3 Lego Mindstorm kits students build and program robots to do moves and turns. Students build models with gears and conduct experiments testing force and motion like real engineers.

8th grade Spanish One students have been hard at work on a project! They were asked to explore their identity and create three products to explain different aspects of who they are. The three products, all in Spanish, were a mind map, a self-portrait, and an essay.
Assessment: This project will count as a Presentational Communication grade worth 100 points (mind map = 20 points, selp-portrait = 40 points, essay = 40 points) The students used their self-protraits to help guide them as they had a conversation in Spanish with Señora Nelson or with a classmate.
The work students produced is impressive! As students completed the assignments they were displayed in the hallway here at MMS!

Congratulations to this year’s Patriot’s Pen Contest Winners! Christopher Neathawk, an eighth-grader, placed second while Nora Widerstrom, a seventh-grader, placed third. They will be the featured guests at a VFW dinner in February. Thank you to all the students who participated in the contest this year. Your efforts and enthusiastic participation is greatly appreciated, especially by our veterans.

Congratulations to the MMS Choruses on their successful concert last night! The choral students all performed a wonderful concert! Our next performance will be our school-day concert next Wednesday morning, December 21. It is not too late to see the concert. A Letter from Superintendent John Caverly
December 8th, 2022
Dear Marshwood Community,
I hope this note finds you all well. It has been a wonderful start to the school year. To have our buildings in full use and students engaged in multiple opportunities has been such a gift. I must share with you: I am so proud of the work of our district staff over the past 3 months. They have worked tirelessly to create a safe learning environment for all learners that supports the individual learning needs of our students.
Prior to the fall break, our community faced a violent critical incident hoax at Sanford High School and Sanford Regional Vocational Center that brought forth our greatest fear, the safety of our students. As you know, the safety of our students, staff, and community is our top priority. In the wake of this event, the district has taken a number of steps to review our response and test our systems. We have met as individual schools, as district leaders, and with both the Eliot and South Berwick Police Departments. These meetings have been focused on reviewing our communication protocols and procedures to ensure the safety of all.
As part of that work, I wanted to notify the community that we will continue to focus on our building-level crisis planning. This includes age-appropriate safety drills in addition to our typical fire drills. What may be appropriate at Marshwood High School may be drastically different from what occurs in our elementary schools, based on the age and development of the students. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s principal.
It pains me that we live in a world where we need to be concerned about school violence, but we cannot turn a blind eye to this. It is the district's goal to strike the balance between creating a safe environment for all, while not creating fear for anyone or compromising our primary purpose of educating children. As always, I appreciate the community support as we work together to keep our community safe.
Thank you
John Caverly
