Happy New Year to our MMS community! As we begin this new year, we want to carry forward the values we have focused on already this year- responsibility, fairness, compassion, as well as adding our January Core Value- honesty.
Honesty is a moral virtue that involves being truthful, straightforward, and trustworthy. It also means having integrity, being loyal, fair, sincere, and showing respect for others. This month our SEL Advisory activities will feature the idea that honesty facilitates peace and happiness in the individuals who practice it.
As with every month, January is a busy one for our MMS students. Check out some of what is going on with our Hawk students

8th grade Spanish students had a lively and immersive cultural experience as they came together to prepare *cocado*, a traditional Venezuelan holiday drink. Guided by their teacher, they learned about the drink's cultural significance as a festive staple often enjoyed during Christmas and family gatherings. The room filled with the rich aroma of coconut milk, sweetened condensed milk, cinnamon, and vanilla as the students measured and mixed the ingredients. Some added a splash of nutmeg, cinnamon or cinnamon sticks or experimented with variations to make the recipe their own. The activity not only honed their culinary skills but also deepened their understanding of Venezuelan culture, fostering a sense of community and connection to the Spanish-speaking world. Tasting the creamy, spiced drink they had made together was the perfect way to celebrate their learning and the spirit of the holidays.

Debate Team Victory!
The MMS Debate Team traveled to Falmouth yesterday to compete against teams from Falmouth, Kennebunk, and Cape Elizabeth. Calvin and Cole Sheehan-Kopp showed major improvement from round one to round two, and worked together beautifully. Turan Manouchehri and Dayna Krummel earned Marshwood’s first ever debate victories, winning both their affirmative and negative arguments. Congratulations! The Debate Team is always looking for new members and we have a new proposal for our January competition. Our next meeting is Thursday, January 2. If you want to join the Debate Team, see Mr. Rowe for any details.

Auditions for the Winter Musical Rock of Ages: Youth Edition will be Monday, December 16th after school until 5:00pm. Please find audition sign-ups, and other info outside of the chorus room. If you have any questions, please email MMS Theatre Director nicholas.tavares@rsu35.org

One of our goals at Marshwood Middle School is to make sure every student is seen, heard and valued. This month we are honoring Bullying Prevention. At MMS, it is everyone’s responsibility to protect all people from the long-lasting effects of bullying. By encouraging awareness, support, and empathy within our school, we can work together to create a safer and more inclusive environment for all, ultimately putting an end to bullying’s harmful impact. Our school counselors, Ms. Camp and Ms. Ring provide teachers and students with resources to support bully prevention. We have an information bulletin board in our lobby and we have worked on bully prevention lessons through our Advisory time.
In addition to our work on bully prevention this month, students celebrated kindness through the work we are doing with the BARR program. In Social Studies classes our young citizens were asked to think about paying it forward with acts of kindness. Ask your MMS student about the acts of kindness they have done lately!

Marshwood Transportation Update
Due to circumstances beyond our control, we are consolidating Bus 14 to Buses 17 and 25 until at least the end of this week. Bus 25’s elementary route will not be affected.
Please be patient as we do our best to navigate this. Please be out at least 10 minutes earlier than your child's normal stop time.
Thank You,
Dylan Hanley
Director, Transportation
