Elizabeth Clark, an 8th-grade social studies teacher, wrote a grant in order to receive a copy of Stamped for each 8th-grade student. The book, originally written by Ibram X. Kendi and then adapted to a young adult version by Jason Reynolds, explores the history of racism and how it has been perpetuated since its origins. This text, also being read by all of the district staff and teachers, has been a catalyst for important conversations in class and has provided another perspective when discussing historical events.
Civil rights advisor Nicole Nelson has adapted the lessons for her Spanish classes this year to include gender inclusive pronouns. As gender inclusive language has become more integrated in Spanish speaking countries, especially with younger speakers, Nicole has made sure to share these modern updates with her students. She teaches both the traditional masculine and feminine adjectives as well as the gender inclusive form of the adjective (for example) so that her students have the correct language to represent themselves and others when speaking in their new language. She reports that her students have embraced all three options quickly and understand the importance of being able to speak in a way that makes the listener feel represented.
