MHS Mock Election

On Tuesday, October 29, 2024 Marshwood High School students participated in Maine’s statewide mock election. 237 Maine students and 35 New Hampshire students participated, which was a total turnout rate of 40.26%

The Maine students voted for the President / VP, Maine’s Senator, Maine’s Representative to Congressional District 1, and Maine’s five statewide ballot questions.

The New Hampshire students voted for the President / VP, NH’s Governor, NH’s Representative to Congressional District 1, and NH’s lone statewide ballot question.

Mr. Sanzone received help administering the mock election from students in his History, Civics, and AP Government classes. Special thanks to sophomores Lucia Blanchette and Payton Caswell who volunteered as “head clerks” and their “assistant clerks” Mira Rosinski, Ava Sanzone, and Maya Sanzone, all juniors who volunteered to help. Additional thanks to goes to Mr. Sanzone’s period 4 AP Government class who helped process the results at the end of the day. This group included: Addie Beale, Brynn Butler, Max Curry, Luca DeGrappo, Ryan Essex, Lilly Genarro, Lauryn Gobbi, Charlie Hudson, Jesse Jacques, Hailey McIntire, Aliyah Painter, Isaiah Perodin, Brianna Schoff, Sarah Theriault, and Fiona Tierney.

It was also great to have the support of the MHS Principal Mr. Hoogterp who gave the green light to holding a mock election, along with Assistant Principal Ms. Glynn and Marshwood teacher emeritus Khayyam Mohammed who regularly encouraged students to vote during their lunch periods.

Finally, a very special thank you goes to Mallory Cook, the Chair of the South Berwick Town Council, and South Berwick Town Clerk, Tyanne Giambusso, who helped facilitate the donation of several voting booths to Marshwood High School, which added a more realistic feel to the mock election.

The feedback from both students and staff was very positive and it was awesome to see and hear our students engaged in civil conversations about the election!
